GenUrb and HKMU host workshop on gender and the urban

GenUrb and Hong Kong Metropolitan University co-hosted a workshop that brought together global scholars on gender and the urban between December 5 and 6, 2024 in Hong Kong. This workshop explored issues at the intersection of urban and gender studies in the Global South and beyond towards understanding how urbanization is changing women’s lives in the city. Scholars also explored how urban development and capitalism have reshaped women’s lives across different classes and produced new urban geographies. This workshop was convened by Drs. by Linda Peake, Penn Tsz Ting IP and Anindita Datta (GenUrb team) as well as Drs. Terence Shum and Xuying Yu (Hong Kong Metropolitan University). Sessions covered social reproduction in the city, gender neutrality and the platform economy in Hong Kong, mother-daughter relationships during Covid-19 in Shanghai and the gender dynamics of hypergamy in Shanghai.
